Another thing you can easily skip is GFCS on Fuso and the Soviet cruisers that get (and keep) spotter planes, since (at least in my opinion) their stock range is perfectly adequate anyway, and the spotter can increase it when necessary. There are many upgrades that are pointless if you're just grinding through the ship though, like Myoko torps (unlocking Mogami will unlock them automatically) and C hulls with sidegrade AA layouts on a lot of tier 7–9 destroyers. Plus, you need to unlock all the upgrades to 'Elite' the ship, but that only allows XP conversion with doubloons, so it's not crucial to do. Now, I would recommend getting all the upgrades anyway, as it'll make the grind to the next ship more bearable as you'll have a better ship to perform with.
